As active members of the South Kingstown community, we hear many questions from new and experienced chiropractic patients. Some of the most commonly asked questions and answers are below…
Zimmer Chiropractic does not work with any insurance companies. Unfortunately these companies today make it even harder for us to work with them then it is for you to work with them. Every health provider is frustrated with the system today, and we have simply said ENOUGH!
At Zimmer Chiropractic we want you to understand that your health is ultimately your responsibility, and we are here to help you. If you have a typical RI insurance plan you might find out that our fees are actually lower than your contracted out of pocket rates (or co-pay) included in your insurance plan. We accept cash, check, debit/credit card or your HSA/FSA accounts. You can always ask us for a receipt to submit to your insurance company, but we accept no responsibility for reimbursement.
The initial consultation and exam cost 90$, the follow up visit to go over your results are included. The cost for your individualized plan will be determined by your exam results.
It seems that there is always much controversy surrounding the safety of chiropractic care. Rest assured that chiropractic is very safe for people of all ages. Please take the time to look at the facts and decide for yourself:
- “Chiropractors cause strokes!” The risk of a stroke from a chiropractic adjustment is 1 in 1 MILLION (Haldeman DC, MD, PHD, Top Clin Chiro. 1995; 2(3 ) You are more likely to be struck by lightning! Do not allow yourself to be fooled!
- The risk of a neurological complication from a chiropractic adjustment for children is 1 in 25O MILLION” ( J of Vert. Subluxation Research, Jun 1998 ). The odds of winning the Mega Millions Jackpot are 1 in 176 MILLION!
As compared to medicine:
- “40,000 deaths per year in Canada from medical mistakes.” (Macleans, Aug. 13, 2001)
- “The Risk of death from Anesthesia is 1 in 1000.” (Chapman-Smith, The Chiro Report, May 1994)
- “Tylenol kills more people than COCAINE! (Jan.12, 1998 Forbes Magazine, “J&J’s Dirty Little Secret”)
- “180,000 deaths per year occur from medical mistakes, the equivalent of 3 jumbo jet crashes every 2 days!” (Dr. Lucien Leape, Harvard school of Public health — JAMA, Dec. 21 1994)
The chiropractic adjustment at our office is very gentle and performed with the hands. For a handful of members the adjustment can be uncomfortable, even those members have said that they would NOT describe the experience as painful. Because our focus in on normalizing the nervous system we do NOT adjust our patients on every visit.
There is a variety of reasons for a child to see a chiropractor. In fact, the #1 reason children see a chiropractor is for wellness. Many parents today are choosing to be proactive with their children’s health, rather than reactive.
This fits perfectly with the chiropractic mindset, which is wellness within the body and thus proactive and preventative. Many of our parents bring their newborn infants to our office on the way home from the hospital, before even going to the pediatrician.
Other common reasons for children to see a chiropractor include difficulty nursing, colic, and ear/sinus infections, which are all conditions often caused by problems with the upper neck that likely were caused by birth trauma such as C-section or forceps delivery. Parents also bring their kids to a chiropractor for care of colds and flu-like issues (antibiotics are a poor, even dangerous treatment for viral infections).
Dr. Shane specializes in the care of children with Neuro-Developmental Disorders such as autism, ADD/ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and learning disabilities.
Since chiropractic seeks to restore balance and proper function to the nervous system, chiropractic for these kids, often has life-altering changes! We understand the importance of checking our children for nervous system interference so that they do not have to live a life shackled to medicines. If you are a patient and you love your children why would you not want them to at least be checked for nerve interference? If you choose to not have them checked today, give them a few years and they may end up in the same place you are now!
Typically you will not be adjusted on day 1.
Day one’s focus is on you getting to know us, and for us to learn your goals and values. Day one is designed for us to discuver what you have gone through in your life. Just like a snowflake, every client is very different. While we are similar in our anatomical make-ups, we all have had different life experiences that greatly impact our health. Because of this, it is impossible to answer this question for you in a FAQ section. However, based on our years of clinical experience, we have found that it usually takes four to six months of initial care where the client will be getting their nervous system checked anywhere between three times a week and once a week.
After the initial care has been completed, we offer maintenance plans for you to choose from if you wish to continue to have the integrity of your nervous system checked on a regular basis.

If you find yourself having “tried everything” but have yet to see the results you are looking or are looking for a natural vitalistic path to health then Chiropractic may be your answer. If you are reading this right now, then you may be ready to start your journey back to health. Why wait to start living a healthier life?
Chiropractic is absolutely safe for children. In fact, it is unsafe to have your child’s nervous system interfered with during their growth and development. Your kids have your genetics, why wait for them to develop the same problems you have when we can prevent them from suffering today.

Chiropractic is focused on restoring the function of the entire nervous system. Contrary to common perceptions of chiropractic, our focus is not on the bones of the spine, but rather on the body’s nervous system. This is extremely important to understand because the nervous system controls every organ, cell, muscle and system in the body. Therefore, by restoring nervous system function, many patients have positive health changes throughout their entire body including their immune system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, to name a few.
The goal of chiropractic is to normalize the function of the nervous system within your body. Once this has been accomplished, true healing begins to occur. We will work together in the beginning to accomplish that. The key to seeing results though lies in maintaining proper nerve function over time. The results you are looking for come as a result of our ability to maintain your nervous system free of interference. Should you choose to discontinue your care, it does not mean you will become sick once again. However, I typically see the people that discontinue regular check-ups come back months or years later, generally with the same problem. After you have worked so hard to regain that which you had once lost, your health, would it not make sense to get your nervous system checked periodically?
